DAY 1 - THE REYKJANES PENINSULA

First up is Seltún, a geothermal area, it lies on the fissure zone of the Mid-Atlantic Ridge, making it a high-temperature area. Steam flows from the hot volcanic vents and boiling hot springs. The area is painted in earthly colors of golden brown, red, pink, blue, yellow, white and grey. A boardwalk winds through the area.

Our next stop takes us to Fagradalshraun. The direct translation is „beautiful-valley-mountain-lava-field“. In 2021 a volcano close by erupted forming the lava field. See for yourself the newly formed rock formations and basaltic lava.

It’s the largest mud pool in Iceland. It is 20 meters wide across a rim of mud and is boiling vigorously. Named after a female ghost that was laid there 400 years ago. After causing a great disturbance a priest set a trap for her and she fell into the spring.

Closeby we find Krýsuvíkurberg Cliff. With a fantastic view over the Atlantic and Valahnúkur mountain breaking down into the ocean, this one you cannot miss. The rich birdlife at the cliffs brings approximately 60.000 individual birds in the height of summer when they lay their eggs on the cliffs.

Next we reach the bridge between the continents. The bridge connects the European and the North American tectonic plates. They are continuosly drifting apart with great forces under the gaping rifts causing these large fissures to form. See for yourself the evidence and the effects it has on the country‘s geography.

DAY 2 - THE SNÆFELLSNES PENINSULA

In Old Norse mythology berserkers were mighty warriors who fought their battles in a trance-like fury. However, we are not going to spoil the origin of the name of this area yet, listen to our guide once you arrive and you will be able to learn a lot about this 4.000 years old gem of nature.

It is claimed to be the most photographed mountain in the country, and for good reason. The beautiful waterfall Kirkjufellsfoss is closeby, let‘s visit that too.

Next up is Saxhóll, a 3000 year old, 100 meter high, dormant volcanic crater. Reach the top and enjoy the rewarding view.

Welcome to lava wonderland. Long ago there was a busy fishing village in this area. To earn their place on the fishing vessels the local men had to prove their strenght. Do you have what it takes?

A beautiful and charming fishing village. The local cliffs have been eroded by powerful waves over the centuries forming beautiful shapes. A statue of Bárður Snæfellsás (half man, half troll) is located here.

Let us visit Búðakirkja, a historic church located on the peninsula. Important historical artifacts were saved here in the 19th century, thanks to a woman named Steinunn. Let‘s have a look.

Unlike most of the beaches in Iceland, Ytri-Tunga has golden sand, rather than black. It is one of the most reliable place in Iceland to see seals. Your guide will lead you to the exact place, where you can find them.

Our first official stop is the Berserkjahraun lava field. In Old Norse mythology berserkers were mighty warriors who fought their battles in a trance-like fury. Coming up next, a local movie star! Kirkjufell is not only the most-photographed mountain in the whole country, but it also had an important role on the popular “Game of Thrones” TV show. Next to the mountain is a beautiful waterfall as well, which we will visit too.

Let us visit a dormant volcanic crater next. Saxhóll has formed 3 000 years ago and it is 100 meters high. To make it easier for us, there is a staircase leading to the top and the view will clearly reward those who reach the top.

Icelandic history is full of strong people. By strong, we mean like really-really strong. At our next stop Djúpalónssandur, we will learn more about this. Back in the day, this, currently uninhabited settlement was a busy fishing village. The local man had to prove their strength in order to earn their place on the fishing vessels. There are four stones to be found on the beach and it is time to test your own strength.

We are heading to Arnarstapi next, a beautiful and charming fishing village. Over the centuries the local cliffs were eroded by powerful waves forming beautiful shapes on the coastline. The guardian of the peninsula, a sculpture by Bárður Snæfellsás is located here as well.

Let us continue with some more Icelandic history at Budakirkja, the “Black Church”. Thanks to a woman named Steinunn, important historical artifacts were saved here in the 19th century, which we will be able to enjoy. Your guide will explain everything in detail once you are here.

Our last stop, before heading back to Reykjavik is Ytri-Tunga, a beautiful golden-colored beach. Huge seal colonies spend their lives here, often laying on the rocks, enjoying the sun. Thanks to your experienced travel companion, you will be lead to the exact place, where you can find them. Please do not disturb their nap though, being a seal is not always an easy job and they are really into relaxing as much as possible.
