About the tour
Deildartunguhver
Reykholtsdalur is one of Iceland’s most popular places to see hot springs, along with the Geysir Geothermal Area, the Highlands, the Reykjanes Peninsula, Reykjadalur Valley, and Námaskarð Pass. While each of these areas has its appeal, at no other does the water rise with such ferocity. The water at Deildartunguhver hot spring emerges at a constant 97 degrees Celsius (207 degrees Fahrenheit). The hot spring is the most powerful in Europe and around 180 liters per second of boiling hot water flows out of the ground.
Hraunfossar
Hraunfossar, known as the “Lava waterfalls”. A truly spectacular place where water runs down the Hallmundahraun lava field. The lava field that Hraunfossar trickles through flowed from an eruption of one of the volcanoes lying under the nearby glacier of Langjökull, the second largest ice cap in Iceland. The waterfalls pour into the Hvítá river from ledges of less porous rock in the lava.
Barnafoss
Just a short walk away is Barnafoss, the “Waterfall of the children”. The waterfall came to its name when two children tried to cross the river and fell to their deaths. Barnafoss is a magical site in and of itself, twisting, turning, foaming, and churning as it races down a narrow valley, from which you can view it from above. It is even more fantastical, due to its contrast with Hraunfossar.
Húsafell Canyon Bath
The Húsafell Canyon Baths provide a wonderfully solitary and remote setting to enjoy the splendor of the highlands. There is no experience more authentically Icelandic than hiking through the surreal landscapes of the highlands followed by a relaxing soak in a geothermal pool. The Húsafell locals who undertook the Canyon Baths project went to great lengths to keep the entire structure as environmentally unobtrusive, sustainable, and true to the area’s heritage as possible. Choose from three geothermal pools of varying temperatures, 30-41°C (86-105°F), plus a cold-water spring at 10°C (50°F), each with a spectacular view of the surrounding canyon, mountains, and glaciers.
