PRIVATE GLACIER LAGOON AND SOUTH COAST TOUR

About the tour

After your pick-up, we head out of the city. We shortly arrive in the countryside passing Hellisheiðarvirkjun, the geothermal power plant for the capital area. As we venture south, we will drive through the typical lowlands of this area. In the distance, we can already see the mountains and the ice cap of Mýrdalsjökull glacier. On sunny days it is also possible to see the Westman Islands shimmering in the Atlantic Ocean. 

Our first stop is Seljalandsfoss waterfall. If conditions allow we talk a walk behind the waterfall curtains. After a short ride, we arrive at Skogafoss waterfall. Skogafoss was featured in “Game of Thrones” and it is said that one of the first settlers has buried a treasure chest behind it. 

Next up is Reynisfjara black sand beach. The beach was once rated as one of the 10 most beautiful places worldwide. In the summertime, hundreds of Puffins are nesting here and the rock stacks called Reynisdrangar are standing picturesque in the ocean next to the beach. Reynisfjara is also the perfect place to grab something to eat.

After that, we will drive through Öræfi, a no man’s land surrounded by black sand deserts. After a while, you will see Vatnajökull appear on the horizon. We use the opportunity to take some photos of the incredible mountain range in the distance. Next up is clearly the highlight of the tour. 

Jökulsárlón is a glacier lagoon situated next to Breiðamerkurjökull glacier and it is in fact the deepest lake in Iceland. Filled with icebergs of 1 000 to 1 500 years of age floating around the lagoon, this place never ceases to amaze. Just a short walk away, we can find the world-famous Diamond Beach. After parts of the icebergs float into the ocean, they find their way back to the black sand beach, creating a spectacular view.
