About the tour
Seltun
After your pick-up, our first stop will be at Seltun. Seltun is an important high-temperature geothermal area. A boardwalk leads through the area. Seltún has many mud pots and fumaroles, and minerals deposited from geothermal solutions provide colorful sediments. We can find it next to Kleifarvatn lake and on top of an active volcano.
Krýsuvíkurberg Cliff
Next up is Krýsuvíkurberg Cliff (only accessible from April – October). The cliffs are known for their rich birdlife and the fantastic view over the Atlantic ocean. Krýsuvíkurbjarg is home to 60 000 individual birds in the height of summer when migratory species come to lay their eggs. The most common species are fulmar, guillemots, razorbills, peewits, and kittiwakes, and there are small numbers of puffins that nest here in summer.
Gunnuhver
The Reykjanes Peninsula is highly volcanic, due to the fact that the Mid-Atlantic rift runs right through it. This leads to many hot springs, so no wonder our next stop will be another powerful geothermal area called Gunnuhver hot spring. The tale of Gunnuhver is an example of classic Icelandic folklore, tying together the harshness of life on the island, ghosts, curses, and the saving power of Christianity and your guide will tell you the interesting story behind it.
A bridge between the continents
After a short drive, we will reach the bridge between the continents. As the name says, the bridge is connecting the European and the North American continent (geologically speaking). It is an excellent place to learn about the geology of Iceland; Reykjanes Peninsula is lined with volcanoes and coated in lava rock, showing the effect this rift has on the country’s geography.
Optional: Blue Lagoon
The beneficial powers of geothermal seawater were first discovered in the early 1980s when local residents began to bathe in the serene blue lagoon that had formed in the lava field beside the Svartsengi Geothermal Resource Park. Today, many decades after the first inquisitive souls began venturing into the water, the Blue Lagoon has blossomed from a humble curiosity into a wellspring of wonder. Admission is included in the tour price (comfort package). If you want to upgrade your package to premium admission, you can do so during the booking process.
