The Snæfellsnes Peninsula is often called "Iceland in Miniature". It is the perfect combination of waterfalls, rough lava fields, black sand beaches, and Icelandic folklore. We head west and our first stop is a small town called Borgarnes. After a quick stop to buy some snacks and refreshments we are on our way to the Peninsula. In good weather conditions, we can already see the glacier that sits atop a stratovolcano that is well known from the novel "Journey to the center of the Earth".

About the tour

Berserkjahraun Lava Field
The first stop is Berserkjahraun lava field. It was created around 4 000 years ago after the three surrounding volcanos erupted shortly after each other. The name also comes from an exciting story back from the Viking age. Your guide will tell you all about it and he’ll show you the way to a secret and hidden waterfall.

Kirkjufell
The most photographed mountain in Iceland is next on our list. You probably noticed it on the TV show “Game of Thrones”. It is surrounded by a beautiful waterfall you’ll get enough time to stroll around the walking paths to explore the area.

Saxhóll Volcanic Crater
A countless amount of volcanic craters can be seen during the drive. Now it’s time to put a foot on one of the dormant craters on the peninsula. Saxhóll was created around 3 000 years ago and it is 100 meters high. A staircase makes the walk to the top very easy and the reward is a brilliant view over the surrounding lava fields.

Djúpalónssandur
Iceland is known for its black sand beaches. Djupalonsandur is one of them and this place will definitely amaze you. Back in the day, a harbor for fishing boats could be found here and all the fishermen had to prove their strength beforehand. In order to do that, they had to lift stones of different weights. Only the strongest were able to secure a spot on one of the boats. The stones still can be found on the beach and you will have a chance to test your own strength.

Arnarstapi
The next stop will be in Arnarstapi, a beautiful and charming fishing village. During the time, powerful waves eroded the cliffs and left the stunning rock formations behind that can be seen today. Also, a sculpture of Bárður Snæfellsás, the guardian of the Peninsula, can be found here.

Budakirkja Black Church
The church was build in 1703. After the Danish king decided to dismiss the church in 1819, several residents fought for the reclamation and in 1849 they got the allowance to build a new chapel. A woman named Steinunn saved some of the old artifacts and thanks to her, we can still see them today.

Seal Colony at Ytri-Tunga
We are already on our way to Reykjavik, but we will have one last stop at a beautiful golden-colored beach. Huge seal colonies can be found at this beach during the whole year and your guide will lead you to the place where you can find them.

To make the best out of your day, we can add different extra activities to the tour. Just choose the one you like during the checkout process:

  • Kayak Tour: Get the best view possible of Kirkjufell, Europe’s most photographed mountain! On this 2 hour-long guided tour, you will paddle along the beautiful Icelandic coastline and have the chance to view this magnificent mountain from all angles. Along the way, there are stops at various scenic locations where you can take photos, meet some curious seals, float in the sea or just enjoy the beautiful view. We guarantee your friends will be jealous of your photos!
  • Lava Cave: The area all around the glacier contains hundreds of lava tubes, which makes the area really special for those interested in caves. The cave itself is an 8000-year-old lava tube created by a volcanic eruption from a nearby crater in the Purkhólar crater family. As the lava rushed down the hill in a lava river it began to cool on the surface, creating a crust on top of the lava river. As the eruption stopped, all the lava from underneath this crust continued to drain out. That eventually left behind an empty tube with a roof on top that gradually cooled down.

Hunting Northern lights My favorite part was that our guide was very passionate about the northern lights. We went to different places to hunt for the northern lights. I think our guide's name was Thomas (sorry can't remember). However, even when the northern lights wasn't visible to the naked eye, he would tell us to try to take a pic of the skies and see if there were any. Fortunately, there was. The main part was that he was willing to stop and wait for a full blown northern lights where you're able to see it. I call that dedication. Thank you very much for the experience.

Icelandic folklore, seals, and more nice things! We did this tour with Matej as our guide and it was super pleasant! He was super friendly, giving us the time we needed to take pictures and so on, and most importantly, he gave us so many stories and information about all the places we've been to! I highly appreciated it to know a little bit about the Icelandic culture, history of the land we were passing through. It was very interesting really! Snaefellsnes was nice to discover, I was curious about that part of Iceland because I have never been to or heard about it but it's very lovely and the last stop was in ytri tunga, a beach with seals and it was incredible to see those beauties from that close in the middle of their natural habitat! I highly recommend this tour and traveling in particular with this company, that made us feel very confortable!

Great experience, recommend it! I did this tour mid of June and I absolutely loved it. We heard some agencies were canceling tours so we were a bit afraid for our holidays but this one is guaranteeing departures with no minimum passengers so it was perfect. The guide was super nice and interesting. The Golden Circle is a must see if you can to Iceland and the Secret Lagoon was the cherry on the cake, very authentic (more than the Blue Lagoon or Sky Lagoon for instance). I highly recommend you to take this tour when coming here with this agency!!!

Brilliant What a brilliant tour! Chris our guide was excellent, very friendly and knowledgeable. The stops were beyond what photos can convey, every stop we made was incredible! Some put of this world scenery. Lovely to be able to do some nice walks whilst on a multi stop tour as well. There was just one other couple on the tour so it was almost like a private day trip! Can't recommend enough, go for it!
